media conventions

I just recently watched the cartoon, "Inside out" The film is set in the mind of a young girl named Riley Andersen, where five personified emotions- joy, sadness, fear, anger, and  disgust, tries to lead her through life while her parents has decided to move to California  from Minnesota, and she has to adjust to her new life. this media genre would be considered to be an animated comedy fiction with a message. the convention that makes up this movie would be the animated characters  that are being helpful through her life, her "imaginary friend" all the bright colors, and even the creative places that the emotions have created for her like family place, friendship land, and what she loves to do most the  hockey center. most times in animated movies we think "child like" and lot colors, 3D animations, silly looking cartoons and places ECT, well the media conforms to genre conventions when creating animated movies like inside out because like most cartoons most younger children are more attracted to these kind of movies, this audience (little kids) love bright colors and will be fascinated by all the colors therefor will stay more focused on the movie, the  creative places/ silly looking places, media is  understanding that  kids have wild imaginations and the lastly the media creates these animated movies to have an message behind it, but also clear and easy for the  audience to understand. https://prezi.com/shv9tjldzuvq/how-and-why-does-your-text-product-conform-to-genre-conventions/

  2. I really enjoyed this movie. It not only is a fun kids movie, but it also opened up the conversation of mental health and illness which has always been a tough subject for people to talk about, because it has been a conversation that many didn't know how to talk about or understand. These kind of movies is how the media can help and teach society to rethink the way we discuss different social issues.

  3. I have not seen this movie but even all my friends have been begging me too, they say this isn't just a kids movie but it gets the adult thinking too! so my question than is why is this considered a kids movie?

  4. I like it when 'kids movies' have lots of layers... I think that's one thing Pixar is really great at. They hit all the things that kids like (silly humor for example) but also put in enough story line and depth for adults to enjoy them too. I took my boys to see Inside Out at the theater because I wanted to see it as much as they did.

  5. I really loved this movie!I didn't expect to feel such a connection to a movie aimed at kids, but they really did a good job of making it relatable to all ages. I also agree completely with what Marissa said about how it opened up the conversation about mental health. These days there is a huge stigma surrounding mental illness. Hopefully seeing it portrayed this way, so simple that a child could understand, helped some adults themselves to understand.

  7. I like how you discuss having so many bright colors like in your face describing a kids movie cause that's very similar to how I feel. So this movie is so interesting in that the characters themselves are so color oriented. I think this makes it easy for the target audience (children) to differentiate between characters and associate colors with emotions and such.

  8. I loved this movie, I watched it in two different countries last summer with my family. It was very funny at times but it had a very strong underlying message about life's hardships and how to deal with them. I heard this movie was being shown to kids with personality disorders to help them.

  9. First I just want to say this movie is awesome ! I love the message it is sending to children and the people who watch them! This movie had real life issues put into a way children themselves could understand ! I think that this movie is one of the movies that a child should watch and the genre should have been a mixture of things! It was funny, sad, romantic, and dramatic all in one ! Those movies always come out on top!

  11. Awesome thread! Yall are pointing out that Inside Out follows many conventions of the "kids movie," the bright colors, the humor, the animation, etc. Yall are also pointing out how it innovates by addressing mental health and major life changes like moving. And it represents these issues in ways that both kids and adults can relate to (the colors-as-emotions, etc.), if its representation of mental and emotional health may be simplified (it's a "kids movie" after all).

Do you think there's a sub-genre here? Kids movies with serious themes? Kids movies that parents can enjoy too? We've all seen kids movies with sex jokes and things that a kid wouldn't get. I wonder if this is like that, but with more of a message.
