I just recently had time to just sit around this weekend and watched the pirates of the Caribbean on Netflix , and I HOPE everybody knows what the pirates of the Caribbean is BUT if not , this Disney movies series is based on pirates and their adventure and different things they encounter , that's kind of the best way I can describe it lol, this movie is rated PG-13 , personally this is a appropriate rating for the content of the movie, when this movie first came out I was not able to see the movie with out one or both of my parents, I could not understand what this was because it was a product of Disney, they also had commercial/advertisement for the movie on Disney , so I was confused on why it was not just rated PG.
when I researched why this movie series got this rating,(https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/pirates-of-the-caribbean-the-curse-of-the-black-pearl) the unknown group of people that viewed it said that they feel as though the Parents of the children that was going to watch the movie needed to know that there's lots of violence for a PG-13, and while it is not especially graphic, there are images, including the literally skeleton pirate crew and a false eyeball that keeps coming out, that may be disturbing to some viewers. There are some revealing bodices and some mild sexual references, including prostitutes (not explicit and no nudity or sexual situations). There is some strong and colorful pirate language. Characters drink rum and get tipsy.
according to the things that they pointed to the ratings for this movie seemed to be acceptable, but who is to say that the children who has seen the movie or is going to watch the movie in the future has not already been exposed to the "explict" behavior before , weather its from the parents at home, who is taking them to see the movie, or during another movie, and even through music and the language from that. who agrees or disagree that Disney pirates of the Caribbean should be rated PG 13?
I agree with this rating the movie is in no way "Bad" but showing characters getting drunk won't qualify you under PG in the US. But in more "Bold" countries such as Germany for example i could see this being PG.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Pirates of the Caribbean was on Netflix, thanks for the tip! The rating system in the US is so strict I'm surprised this movie wasn't rated R. I had always assumed it was rated PG especially because it's portrayed as sort of a family movie. I can see why it was rated PG 13 but to be honest, a lot of things that gave it that rating are things kids already know about or will know eventually. Like drinking some alcohol, many kids see their parents drink every day, so I don't think watching a pirate do it would really be negative.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Edwin on the U.S being super strict on their ratings. I remember seeing this when it came out in theaters. Most parents thought this was a good family movie and that little kids could watch. I also remember a lady escorting her child from the theater because she said the movie was too graphic. My parents did not think so, they though the movie rocked. Because the franchise is owned by Disney, it makes me think about how the rating system was probably very lenient with this movie. After all they get payed by these big companies.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the rating with it being PG-13 some BUT I heard that Jhonny Depp went to watch with his little son anhyways and the little son even liked it. I could understand that the movie has some sexual content and drunk stuff but over all I agree. I didn't really care for the movie when I was younger though.

ReplyDeleteNice post! I found part of your link strange. It has a section suggesting things that "families can talk about..." and for this film the two suggestions are "Families can talk about the rules/guidelines distinction and the movie's many broken promises. Families could talk about the history of pirates and where they came from and if they still exist."
ReplyDeleteOddly, neither of these topics are really about the issues that make the film PG-13! Maybe families could talk about why some characters "drink rum and get tipsy" or why characters dress the way they do, or how an eyeball popping out of a skeleton's head is used as a bit of humor. Obviously, different conversations depending on a child's age, but isn't one point of a ratings system to encourage debate about norms and values and representations on screen?
